About Makgabeng Plateau Conservancy

The Makgabeng Plateau Conservancy covers a vast, rugged landscape in the Limpopo Province, South Africa, defined by dramatic sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, and wide plateaus. The region is best known for its exceptional rock art sites created by the San (Bushmen) people, with thousands of paintings that provide insight into ancient hunter-gatherer cultures. Geographically, the Conservancy features extensive escarpments that offer panoramic views of the surrounding Lowveld and Limpopo River basin. Ecologically, the plateau supports mixed woodland savanna dominated by mopane, marula, and baobab trees, providing habitat for species such as kudu, impala, baboons, and a variety of bird species. The cultural significance of the area is immense due to the concentration of rock art and archaeological sites, some dating back thousands of years, which attract historians, archaeologists, and tourists alike. Outdoor recreation is centered on guided hikes and cultural tours designed to explore the rock art sites safely while respecting the area's sensitivity. The Conservancy also offers mountain biking and wildlife viewing opportunities. Its remote location contributes to an off-the-beaten-path outdoor experience that highlights both natural beauty and historical intrigue. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful environment, spectacular views from the top of sandstone cliffs, and the chance to connect with one of Southern Africa’s oldest cultural landscapes.
